Glycerol
All of the ingredients we use for The Biology Serum™ play a role in our evolutionary success, and Glycerol is no exception. It evolved about 3.6 billion years ago and is the backbone of the lipids (fats) that the cell wall is made from.
Glycerol made possible the earliest protocells - cells with no nucleus. So it’s clearly skin-native and non-cytotoxic at natural levels. It’s also a humectant, like hyaluronic acid, released by skin pores from the sebaceous glands, so it’s a natural moisturising factor (NMF).
These multiple effects are not merely the humectant aspect of Glycerol, they are far more complex and subtle than drawing water from their air to the skin.
We use Glycerol in its original evolutionary role to stablise, restore and hydrate. It plays its part in the optimal hydration strategy of the The Biology Serum™, as too much hydration (as well as too little) weakens the skin barrier and its function.
